On Monday, April 14, 2025, The Conversation, an online news media source whose content is sourced from academics, published “Social Security’s trust fund could run out of money sooner than expected due to changes in taxes and benefits” written by Dennis Jansen.

The article details the breadth of the program, in that almost 67 million Americans received Social Security benefits in 2023, but trouble is on the horizon. “The retirement and disability program has been running a cash-flow deficit since 2010…Social Security’s trustees…projected in 2024 that both of its trust funds would be completely drained by 2035” explains Jansen.

Past and current Administrations have only accelerated the trust funds’ demise. Now a different prescription is needed – a balanced budget, reforms shared across generations, and slowing benefit growth.
