On February 17, 2025, KBTX interviewed Dennis Jansen on the impacts of aluminum tariffs on firms and consumers.
President Trump announced a 25% tariff on aluminum and steel imports. Local businesses who use these materials in their production will see increases in their costs. “Their can cost might go up like 10% or more- which isn’t that big, maybe, because an aluminum can really doesn’t cost that much. But it’s all on the margin and it’s all cutting into their profit margin,” Jansen clarified.
“All the manufacturers in the U.S. that are making cars or window frames, et cetera, they’re using higher priced aluminum now. So, they’re going to be raising their prices. So, aluminum is going to have a small, but rather widespread effect on prices in the US economy.”
