Economic Indicators of the College Station-Bryan MSA, March 2019

The Business Cycle Index decreased at an annualized rate of -1% between December 2018 and January 2019. Nonfarm employment in College Station-Bryan increased 0.9% from December 2018 to January 2019 and is up 3.5% from the January 2018 rate. The unemployment rate increased to 3.1% in January 2019 from 3.0% in December. Real taxable sales declined by 0.5% in January 2019 but were 4.6% higher than sales in January 2018. Real wages decreased by 0.3% from the second to the third quarter of 2018 but grew by 3.1% relative to the third quarter of 2017. This month, we highlight the growth in Texas A&M University’s enrollment, the enrollment composition and growth by college, and the educational attainment of our local population.
