Apology Forthcoming?

On March 2 Governor Abbott announced that businesses in Texas could reopen at 100% capacity, and he lifted the statewide mask mandate.  (Local businesses were of course allowed to require their customers to wear masks inside their shops.)

The very next day, President Biden called this decision by Governor Abbott a “big mistake.”  He opined, “We are on the cusp of being able to fundamentally change the nature of this disease … The last thing we need is Neanderthal thinking...

On the day of Governor Abbott’s announcement daily new cases had already declined to a seven-day moving average value of just over 4,500.  For comparison, they had been as high as 19,000 in mid-January.  Since the Governor’s announcement, daily new cases have continued to decline, and on May 13 2021 the moving average daily new case number stood at 1,600.

Neanderthal thinking, or ahead of the curve?  Perhaps Governor Abbott is owed an apology.
