PERC Staff to Present Pandemic Misery Index at WEAI Conference
Mar 15, 2021
Summary: Director Dennis Jansen and Executive Associate Director Andrew Rettenmaier will present the Pandemic Misery Index at the Western Economic Association International Conference (virtual) on Friday, March 19, 2021.
The Pandemic Misery Index, or PMI, is a single metric that takes into account both human and economic loss by combining the number of deaths per 10,000 population and the unemployment rate beginning in March 2020.
This policy study includes two variants of the PMI. The first variant is based on average state unemployment rates and the cumulative number of deaths per 10,000 residents. The second variant tracks an area’s monthly unemployment rate and death rates relative to the total range of these two metrics since March.
Conference information can be found at the WEAI site.
