PERC Staff Speak on Unemployment, Lifted Mandates in The Eagle

Mar 17, 2021
Summary: Dennis Jansen and Andrew Rettenmaier discussed the current state of employment and the state’s lifting of Covid-19-related business and mask mandates in an interview with The Eagle that was published on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.
The latest figures from the February edition of Economic Indicators show an improvement in both the unemployment rate and nonfarm employment in College Station-Bryan. The local unemployment rate decreased to 5.4% in December, while local nonfarm employment increased slightly by 1% for the same month.
Even with December' rosier figures, there is still room for improvement. “If employment isn’t above where it was last February, much less equal to it, there’s a sense in which we haven’t really totally recovered from the recession,” Jansen said, adding that retail sales and taxable sales figures are also still down.
Looking ahead, Jansen said that a full economic recovery “will hinge on a wide range of factors, including progress against the virus and accompanying consumer behavior.” Governor Abbot announced the lifting of all capacity-related and mask-related mandates in Texas on March 2, 2021.
