KRHD Interviews Dennis Jansen on Industry Employment

Dec 20, 2021
Summary: In an interview that aired on Friday, December 17, 2021 on KRHD news, Dennis Jansen spoke about industry employment data sourced from December’s issue of Economic Indicators.

Although most industries in the College Station-Bryan MSA are approaching or have reached full employment relative to their pre-pandemic levels, as of October, the Leisure and Hospitality industry stood at only 78.8%. “We have a lot of leisure/hospitality workers who I think - in this community, it’s a lot of students - who have decided not to work in our local area," said Jansen.

Although many factors play into why these jobs are not being filled, low wages are partially at fault. “We’ve always been a relatively low wage rate in this area of the state anyhow," he said. "And it could be that as wages are rising in other places, perhaps they’re raising wages faster than we are locally.”
Local businesses owners were also interviewed as part of this article.
