Dr. Jansen Interviewed for Article on January's Economic Indicators
Jan 23, 2019
The January issue of Economic Indicators was a featured article in the Wednesday, January 23 issue of The Eagle newspaper.
The article, written by reporter Kenny Wiley, emphasized that the College Station-Bryan business-cycle index is still on the rise, but is slowing. Economic Indicators featured revised employment counts and local and regional Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rates.
Dr. Jansen, PERC’s director, shared that the College Station-Bryan area had the third fastest GDP growth rate from 2001 to 2017. "You can see that the GDP measured for Bryan-College Station actually climbed during the Great Recession, but it dipped afterwards, and actually fell a bit in 2011 before rising again," Jansen said.
Economic Indicators also breaks down GDP by industry for the local MSA, along with the U.S. and Texas. Texas A&M University’s importance is highlighted in the 29% of local GDP attributed to Government at all levels, above both the state level at 11% and the U.S. at 13% of GDP.
